Tsui-Ling (翠鈴, Tsuoi Rin, Cuìlíng) was the girl Kazuma Yagami was unable to save in the past before he became the Contractor.
Appearance[]
Tsui Ling is a beautiful young girl of average height with emerald green eyes and auburn brown hair with side bangs and two loose side hair strands with the rest of her hair tied back to a large ponytail with a red ribbon. In Kazuma Yagami's flashbacks, she is often seen in her waitress restaurant working outfit, wearing a dark red apron over a pale long-sleeved yellow collared shirt and a long knee-length pink skirt.
Personality[]
Not much is known about her. But from Kazuma's flashbacks, she is seen to be very devoted to her restaurant. She appears as a kind-hearted cheerful person who caters to her customers' needs when she runs her restaurant on a daily basis and evidently seen to be a punctual person who is an early morning riser to carry out her daily routine and prepare to open up the restaurant (there was a scene in the flashback where she had dragged Kazuma out from bed in the morning to help out in preparing to open the restaurant). It was assumed that her kind-hearted bright personality and positive nature had first drawn Kazuma towards her when he started working in her restaurant, later on to falling deeply in love with her and her to him in return, and also leading him to become a different person by changing his reckless way of living and way of outlook before he met her. She is seen to care very much about Kazuma's well being, even before they became lovers.
History[]
Tsui Ling was Kazuma Yagami's former lover during his exile when he went to China and stumbled into her restaurant. Kazuma loved her dearly. At one point, Tsui Ling and Kazuma were captured by Stars and Sagacity.
She was sacrificed by the head of the Armagest, Erwin Leszaar, to summon a demon. Bernhardt Rhodes used a spell to gather her remaining essence into a being he called Lapis. Before her sacrifice, she and Kazuma worked in a restaurant and were in love. In the last Episode 24, Lapis states that her last thoughts were that she wished Kazuma was dead. Whether this is the truth or a lie meant to cause Kazuma pain, this remains unknown (Kazuma notes that she may have said this out of spite towards his inability to save her). As for Lapis, she is trained in anti-mage fighting and served under her master, Bernhardt Rhodes, and can be considered as a member of the Armagest.
Legacy[]
Tsui Ling is occasionally seen throughout the series whenever Kazuma is in some distress. Her death and Kazuma's inability to keep his promise to protect her became his driving force to protect everyone with his wind powers. Her image would also be used against Kazuma to haunt him as Bernhardt Rhodes would use her image to torment Kazuma through Lapis, a near-identical replica of Tsui Ling born from her final thoughts.
